1. Why did I turn yellow and feel unwell at the end of a 7-day fast?
Dear Jimmy and Megan,

I recently completed my first 7-day fast and I felt GREAT with tons of energy. I would have continued, but I literally turned yellow and looked desiccated, haggard and unwell. I’ve completed a number of 4-5 day fasts in the past with much less of a problem than anything like this. Have you run across this in the IDM clinic and should I push through and hope it will this improve with time? I don’t have diabetes or any other underlying medical problems.

2. Does fasting raise blood pressure levels?

Hi guys,

For the last month, I have been doing the 5:2 version of fasting as a warm-up for some of the protocols you set out in your fasting book. I’m 46, not diabetic but I am overweight with a BMI of 28, and I’m hoping fasting will prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes, lead to weight loss, and re-calibrate my eating habits. So far I’ve lost 4 pounds, my clothes are looser, and I no longer feel polluted inside. Fasting days are not always easy, especially in this cold northern England climate, but I still look forward to them!

I have recently started having significantly higher blood pressure readings than usual (138/75 upon waking). I’m not completely sure why this is happening, but I did recently complete a course of prednisone for asthma and a chest infection. I also have a busy job with two lively young children. Enough said, right? But I have heard from people on a 5:2 fasting forum that fasting itself may have caused my elevated blood pressure.

Is it true that fasting leads to an increase in blood pressure levels? Thank you for the book and the podcast. I’ve learned so much from both and use them to inspire me when fasting gets hard.

3. Is there a difference between drinking distilled water and filtered water when you are on a water fast?

What’s the difference between drinking distilled water vs. filtered water on a water-only fast? Is there any benefit to using one over the other?

4. Should I be concerned about my appetite dropping on feasting days to match my fasting days during an intermittent fast?

Hi Jimmy and Megan,

I love listening to Fasting Talk and I have a question for you guys. I’ve just started alternate day fasting and I’m fasting on 500 calories (M, W and F) and then eating normally the other 4 days. It’s going pretty well for me so far, but I’m finding that on the “normal eating” days my appetite has reduced a fair bit and I’m not wanting to eat the same amount as I did prior to beginning alternate day fasting. My concern is if I reduce the amount of food I eat to fit with my lowering appetite levels that it will begin to creep downward to where it is on my non-fasting days. Am I at risk for slowing down my metabolism doing this? As someone who has spent most of her life as a yo-yo dieter, I’m really worried about rebound weight gain from doing this.

Can you offer any tips on what I can do to prevent this from happening? I am loving alternate day fasting and really getting into the groove with it. Help me optimize the results I’ll get from it. Thanks for this great podcast…it’s at the top of my listening list!

5. Do the watery stools/diarrhea that can happen during and after a fast be an indication of and come from gut bacteria dying off?

Hi Jimmy and Megan,

I am one of those people who ends up with watery stools during and after I break a fast. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about why. I know Jimmy mentioned that he was also puzzled as to what is coming out when nothing is going in during an extended fast. Is it possible that some of the bowel bacteria (which I understand make up a good deal of stool) are dying from not being fed? And since they are dead, they are eliminated from the body while extended fasting? It certainly smells like something died in there. I also wonder whether some of the health improvements of fasting occur because of the elimination of carb-loving bacteria and replacing them with the ones that survive better while fasting. I imagine those are the bacteria that would have thrived inside our ancient ancestors who regularly fasted.
Is there any merit to my theory? Thanks for the new podcast, I never miss it!

    Hey, Jimmy, I am one of those people who has increased blood pressure while water fasting past 3 days. I am already hypertensive taking 2 meds to control it to normal levels. The last 4 times I tried the longer fasts, my blood pressure rose to a highest of 170/105. I haven’t noticed any increases for less than 3 days and no problems with Intermittent Fasting such as 18/6 windows or 24 hr protocols. I have posted my concerns on different groups,forums etc. and have found several who comment with this same issue. Like me, they have been LCHF,Keto and fasters with great results but for some unknown reason the longer fasts create this increase in blood pressure. I am not asking for any medical advice, as I myself am in the medical field with access to such. However there doesn’t seem to be much explanation for this. My hope is that maybe with your connections, you could pass on this concern to the professionals (especially Dr. Jason Fung) who could maybe look into this further; as I and others seem to experience this problem. Thank you Jimmy for all that you do, you are truly a beacon of light in direction for us all.     I enjoy and appreciate the information in this podcast very much but I must concur with eltiochusma that Jimmy’s antics are making it nearly unlistenable. He could perhaps maintain the spirit of his humor but tone it down a bit…? Just extremely distracting and detracts from the message as well as from poor Megan’s valuable contributions when he interrupts her.
